Missed call SMS

A missed call SMS is a text message sent to someone whose call did not get through, because you did not pick up or you declined it. It tells the caller their call was seen and what happens next: a call back, a link, another way to reach you.

What is a missed call SMS for?

An unanswered call leaves the caller guessing: did they dial the right number, will anyone call back, should they try someone else? A short text clears that up. For a tradesperson on a site, a practitioner with a patient or a shopkeeper at the till, it keeps the conversation going without stopping what they are doing. The message can promise a call back, spell out your opening times in the text itself, or invite the caller to send a photo of the problem by SMS.

Manual text or automatic SMS?

You can write the message yourself, call by call, from the phone's call log. That works while missed calls are rare. Beyond that, people forget, or reply in the evening or the next day. A missed call text back goes out on its own: an app detects the unanswered call and sends a text prepared in advance. With CallReply on Android, it is sent from your own number, as an ordinary SMS the customer can reply to.

What a good message includes

Your business name, so the caller knows who is texting. A concrete next step: "I'll call you back today", "reply with your address". Plain wording with no sales offer, since you are answering a contact the caller started. For health or legal professions, nothing confidential: a generic message is enough. And keep it short so it fits in a single SMS segment.

Limits worth knowing

A withheld number cannot receive a text: there is no number to reply to. On iPhone, iOS does not let any app read the call log or send an SMS by itself, so sending goes through the Messages app and you confirm it. You also need guardrails so the same person is not texted several times: one SMS per number per day, a daily cap and a STOP list.
